About

Calgarth Park

A landscape of stories

A Grade II listed Georgian villa, Calgarth Park’s history stretches back to the late 18th century; a time when the Lake District was an attractive destination for poets, artists, and the wealthy elite. A major retirement project, building work on the property started in June 1789, and it took three years to complete before Richard Watson, the Bishop of Llandaff (Cardiff), was able to move in with his wife and eight children.

During his time at the property, the Bishop received and entertained many eminent and influential people, including William Wordsworth and other Lakeland poets.

Under the new ownership of Oswald Hedley in 1905, the property started a new chapter as a hospital.

In 1916, Calgarth Park became a convalescent hospital, used at first for wounded Belgian and then also British officer casualties of the First World War.

At the end of the war, Calgarth Park went through a further reconstruction and was opened in 1920 as the Ethel Hedley Orthopaedic Hospital for Children. Famous for its pioneering work, the hospital provided care for over 3,000 children until its closure in 1970.

Calgarth Park was then converted again. This time, into the retirement apartments we can offer you today.

Located in the heart of the majestic Lake District, Calgarth Park provides rented accommodation and independent living for the over 55s.

Alongside an interesting history, Calgarth Park has a lot to offer.

Whether you’re into the great outdoors or the great indoors, we can provide you with access to a wide range of things-to-do and to enjoy right on your very door step.

At the same time, whilst Calgarth Park is not a care home, we offer a very caring, welcoming and supportive environment.

Whilst we provide independent living, we do so with a high level of companionship in a historic property that’s in the very heart of an area of outstanding natural beauty.
